Free tools make you do the math

Most free generators ask you to type in the calorie and sugar numbers yourself. But how do you know them? That is the hard part โ€” and it is exactly what we calculate from your recipe.

โš–๏ธ

Real FDA rounding, not naive rounding

Calories under 50 round to the nearest 5, over 50 to the nearest 10. Sodium goes to the nearest 5 up to 140mg, then the nearest 10. Get this wrong and your label is technically non-compliant.

Not $175 a label

A consultant charges $175โ€“$500 per label. Subscriptions run $29โ€“59 a month forever. One payment here and you can generate labels for every product in your range.

Questions

Is this label actually FDA compliant?

We apply the 2016 labelling rule: the correct nutrient order, the official Daily Values, and the rounding rules from 21 CFR 101.9. Our output matches the FDA's own sample panel exactly. That said, compliance also depends on things outside the generator โ€” your serving size must follow the RACC for your product category, and some products need laboratory analysis. Use this for the calculation and formatting; confirm the finished label with a food regulatory specialist before a large retail run.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

USDA FoodData Central, Standard Reference Legacy release โ€” the same public-domain dataset that commercial label software pulls from. It covers raw ingredients rather than branded packaged goods, which is what you need for recipe-based calculation.

How do you calculate added sugars?

SR Legacy predates the added-sugars requirement and contains no added-sugar values. We derive them: sugars contributed by ingredients that are themselves added sugars (granulated sugar, brown sugar, honey, syrups) count as added, while sugars naturally present in fruit or dairy do not. You can override the flag on any ingredient.

Can I enter my own ingredients?

Pro lets you add custom ingredients with your own values, which is what you need for branded packaged components such as a specific chocolate or a pre-mix. Free users can search the USDA database only.

Do you store my recipes?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Pro's save feature keeps recipes in your own browser's local storage โ€” still on your machine.

What if my ingredient is missing?

Email us the ingredient. We review missing ingredients regularly and add them to the database.
